The publishing business is tough. Many more books are written than ever make it into print. Whether you’re planning on finding an agent or publisher, or prefer the self-publishing route, you need to be sure your book is edited and proofed well. I have years of experience editing and proofreading hundreds of manuscripts for publication. Please check the Testimonials and list of Published Books.
Types of manuscripts edited:
- Fiction
- Non-Fiction
- Academic
- Medical
- Theology
- Short stories
- Children’s books
- Articles
If your project does not fall into any of the above categories, please e-mail me anyway as this list is only a guide.
Editing is a very demanding skill and one that requires an editor to read every single word individually, while also considering each sentence, paragraph, and chapter both individually and in relation to the entire manuscript. (For fiction work, add scene clarity, depth of characterisations, build-up of tense situations and conflict, development of plot and sub-plots, etc.). I will check all the grammar and punctuation, while retaining your intended point of view and tone, making sure your narrative voice remains yours, not mine.

What does an edit involve?
I do what is known as substantive or development editing. This covers:
- clarity of subject, logic and consistency, and reworking confusing or awkward writing (and/or querying the author on unclear points)
- analysis of sentences for structure/syntax; long sentences may be enumerated or separated and extra-short sentences reworked;
- identification and correction of typographical errors, punctuation errors, misspellings;
- grammar, word usage, capitalisation, word breaks, tone and basic format;
- attention to facts; making sure historical dates are correct;
- consistency of terminology throughout to avoid confusion;
- avoidance of contradiction of information from beginning to end;
- ensuring consistency of author’s style;
- etc!
This type of editing also includes proofreading (identification and correction of typographical errors, punctuation errors, misspellings and formatting inconsistencies) and copy editing (proofreading – plus grammar, word usage, capitalization, word breaks, tone, and format).
I also make suggestions to authors on how they can strengthen this or that and what and how they can avoid a repeated ‘weakness’ in their writing style – if they have one (this is usually more relevant for fiction). I also give plenty of encouragement and positive comments where I can.

Deadline advantage:
I am based in Auckland, New Zealand, and as we are the first in the world to see the sunrise every day, there is an obvious timeline advantage as far as deadlines are concerned. For example, NZ is approximately 12 hours ahead of the UK and Europe; 17 hours ahead of USA EST; 20 hours ahead of USA PST, and 2 hours ahead of the Australian east coast.
